The Movie that IS Sarasota
Courtesy of
If life were a movie, (and who’s to say it isn’t?) we would have a lot of
really fine films to entertain ourselves with here in Sarasota over the next month.
The curtain goes up, the house lights dim and we begin with The Godfather
II starring… no not Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro… but Sarasota’s own celebrated
chef and entrepreneurial celebrities Tommy Klauber and Phil Mancini. “If you
know what’s good for you, you’ll eat it and party too,” is the line at
“Someone’s in the Kitchen with Tommy & Phil, A Godfather II
Interactive Dinner” at Michael’s on East.
Let’s hope the next full-length, live Sarasota feature is more “Splash” than
“Jaws.” That is a free scuba dive with
Florida Underwater Sports. On this “donut dive” Divemaster Carl will lead
an expedition to South Brohard Park, next to Sharky’s in Venice. You’ll look at
the brand new artificial reef created from the large Coquina block and search
for fossils and sharks’ teeth.
Wine lovers take note: In “Sideways” wine was ever-present, but secondary as the
two main characters drunkenly careened around California. But in the documentary
“Mondovino” wine is everything. Sarasota is also a haven for wine (and film) lovers.
“A Time to Taste: The Pacific Northwest” at Cork will feature
acclaimed wines from Oregon, Washington and Northern California. Swirl and spit
with wine specialist Stephen Soboleski and Cork's resident wine guru Rebecca Robinson
in a sampling of their favorite pinots, cabernets, chardonnays and much more.
The kids need some show-time too – Riley's Royal Gala Goes to Hollywood is the area's only
black-tie event produced by children, for children. Put on your red carpet
attire and attitude and celebrate the Life of Riley at the 2008 Riley's Royal
Gala benefit. Proceeds go to provide financial assistance to local children
and their families who are suffering from pediatric brain tumors.
You saw the movie, I know you did, now see the show:
Steel Magnolias at the Manatee Players. Gossip, laugh and cry
along with the cast, Southern style, and remember the line… “Smile, it enhances
your face value.”
Is it more David Lee Roth or Irving Berlin? We guess the latter, but you have
to go to find out: the 3rd Annual ‘Puttin' on the Ritz’ IIDA Social at The-Ritz Carlton in
Sarasota. It will be a night to remember.
Okay, we have one more film before the credits roll. Did anybody see
Knuckleball – an amazing and touching documentary? No? Well
here is your chance at The South Florida Museum. Local filmmaker Ken Sons will
be on hand for a brief question and answer session after the film.
Tired of popcorn and soda? Want to turn your cell phone back on? Go for it,
get out there and make your own Sarasota movie happen.
