Instead of heading to big box stores on Black Friday, why not shop local?

Instead of heading to big box stores on Black Friday, why not shop local?

Black Friday is nearly here and it is estimated that in 2015 consumers spent over $67 billion in stores on Black Friday. But for those with an interest in shopping local, this is an equally ideal weekend for supporting locally-owned, independent businesses in Sarasota, Manatee and Charlotte County. In fact, the day after Black Friday is known as Small Business Saturday and last year alone, 95 million people went out to shop at small businesses on this day.

And that’s no surprise given that Luxury Portfolio International, an affiliate of Michael Saunders & Company, noted in their  2016 White Paper Study that luxury consumers are now looking beyond brand names. In fact, affluent buyers are increasingly searching out independent providers for everything from clothing to hotels and real estate. And since Michael Saunders & Company is independently-owned, we asked a number of our staff and managers to weigh in with some of their favorite stops for shopping local.

A Parker’s Books and Book Bazaar, Sarasota | Downtown Sarasota
“This used-book store has been in business for over thirty years specializing in rare and used, out-of-print and scholarly books. Their selection is unbelievable. My husband is a Sarasota architect and it can be near impossible to find an architecture book that he doesn’t already own. But I’ve learned that I can count on this store near the corner or Main Street and Lemon Avenue to offer design and architecture books we’ve never seen before.”
– Kathryn Parks, Lead Content Corespondent, MSC Marketing

Artisan Cheese Company | Downtown Sarasota
“When I think of Christmas, I always think of cheese. Back home in England, my mum always puts together a lovely cheese board on Christmas Day. That’s why I love Artisan Cheese Company in downtown Sarasota. The owner, Louise, is also from England and she brings in the most amazing cheeses from around the world. The shop also has a brilliant holiday pantry with things like Panettone straight from Italy. A cheese shop gift card would be a great gift for a foodie! Or you could even surprise someone by booking one of the cheese tasting classes they offer.”
– Lucy Hope, Communications Specialist, MSC Marketing

Crowder Bros. Ace Hardware | Two Locations: Lakewood Ranch and West Bradenton
“I love Crowders on Lakewood Ranch Blvd (there’s one in West Bradenton too!). They are attached to the ACE Hardware – which is a locally-owned franchise.  It’s the perfect place for little gifts like jewelry, purses, UF Gator mugs and wearables – the little stocking stuffer things that you need at the last minute or mass amounts of!”
Jennifer Horvat, Chief Marketing Officer, MSC Marketing

G8way Gifts | Gulf Gate
“G8way Gifts is my favorite shop in Gulf Gate in Sarasota. You’ll find handcrafted gifts, sustainable products, and local sourced products. Plus, you won’t see these items anywhere else!”
Melinda Gray, Manager, Michael Saunders & Company Siesta Key office

Left Coast Seafood and Oyster Bar | Venice
“I love getting gift certificates for friends and colleagues here. The Admiral’s Chowder and the Fish Tacos are fresh and delicious!”
-Nancy Arbuckle | New Homes & Condominiums

The Met Fashion House | Day Spa & Salon| St. Armands Circle
“Not only is The Met on St. Armands Circle family-owned and independent, it offers one of the best shopping and salon experiences around.”
 – Michael Saunders, CEO & Founder, Michael Saunders & Company

Toy Lab Sarasota | Downtown Sarasota
“When it comes to holiday shopping, my favorite people to shop for are my niece and nephew (13 & 8) – which means, toys! And the best place for unique children gifts is the Toy Lab on Main St. I found this gem of a store several years ago, and it is my go-to place when shopping for kids. They have the best selections of games, toys, books and items you won’t be able to find at bigger toy stores. This locally owned business has staff willing to help you find just the right toy for your boy or girl; not to mention, they also do gift wrapping!”
-Nancy Thursby, Technology Coordinator, MSC Technology

Valentino Pizzeria | Two Locations: University Parkway and Clark Road
“Why not spend a festive meal or give a gift card to my favorite local spot – Valentino’s Pizzeria!  The food is delicious.  Everything, including the pasta, tastes fresh and homemade and always so yummy!  A true find and always a favorite to share with my special friends.”
Pam Ali, Manager, Michael Saunders & Company Lakewood Ranch office

Venice Wine and Coffee | Venice
“This is a wonderful gift shop, wine store and restaurant at the corner of Venice and Miami Ave’s in Downtown Venice.  The gift store has a wonderful array of gifts for the wine enthusiast, coffee and tea aficionados  as well as foods and sweets to enhance a wine experience.  Glassware, stemware, serving ware, cards, table pieces, specialty food items, wine and other beverage accessories.  The sommelier, Richard, has wonderful relationships with vineyards around the world and has an amazing array of interesting and fabulous wines at all price points.  They make wonderful gift baskets which can be customized.  They also do wine pairing dinners and wine tastings.  We are having our holiday party there in their wine bar as they can do food service as well!”
Laura Benson, Manager, Michael Saunders & Company Venice office

Write-On Sarasota | Downtown Sarasota
“I like to shop at Write-On Sarasota in downtown Sarasota.  I started shopping there when I was in sales at MSC. First, because they are locally owned by Eileen Wallace, but then I quickly found out that in addition to fabulous stationery, they have unique, quality gifts. Plus, they take a personal interest in the recipient so they can help me find the perfect present.”
Georgina Clamage, Manager Longboat Key South and Mid Longboat Key
