Agents share their military experiences to better serve our local heroes

In honor of Veterans Day, we are sharing the experiences of four Michael Saunders & Company agents who bravely served our country. Michael Saunders & Company would like to express gratitude to them and all who have served. It is with honor that we introduce Shelley Addessi, Bernard “BJ” Jones, Greg Pressley and Lisa Sebastian, real estate agents who have served in the military and are Certified Military Specialists. Our Certified Military Specialists provide exceptional real estate experiences to veterans and military members through the U.S. Military on the Move® program.

For Greg, the Marine Corps instilled ethics and values in him which are key ingredients in gaining someone’s trust and helping them make the transition from military to civilian life.

“I understand how the military make the transition to civilian life because I have lived it,” explained Greg. “When I got out of the military, it was difficult since I couldn’t find anyone who could relate to my needs.”

As a result, Greg ended up with an apartment when his real dream was to buy a home. To help others achieve their dream, he brings his high energy level, persistence and diligence to his real estate business, all qualities he learned as a Reconnaissance Ranger in the U.S. Marine Corps.

“I am a disabled vet, but I try not to let it stop me in anything I do. You can live a pretty normal life,” Greg added.

Honoring service and sacrifice is at the heart of the U.S. Military on the Move® program, which provides wounded warriors, retired military and active duty with special benefits on real estate services, including a real estate credit at closing in states where allowed by law.*

“I have a sixth sense for helping those in the military,” stated Lisa. “I know active duty are looking for a home that will need to be turned over when they are reassigned, which can sometimes happen every two to three years so they may not want to spend much to move.”

She adds that some members of the military live on base until they retire.

“They may have a lot of questions about owning a home. I know their unique challenges because of my service.”

Lisa served the U.S. Air Force as a flight nurse and nurse anesthetist and has always felt empathy to others’ needs. Her other qualities include being “prompt, efficient, committed and very goal oriented” — all skills she learned in the military and puts to practice each day as a real estate agent. Lisa helps local heroes by being a member of SRQ Veterans, an organization led by local veterans to help other local veterans.

Another Michael Saunders & Company Certified Military Specialist, Shelley, is also dedicated to helping veterans in our community. She served in the Marine Corps and is an ambassador for the Marine Corps League Peter J. Shanks Detachment 756  in Port Charlotte.

“I think there is an immediate bond from veteran to veteran,” Shelley stated. “I can identify what they’ve gone through and mirror their language. There is a level of understanding that’s easily established of how it applies to their existing lifestyle and what they’re going through.”

Shelley says being “disciplined, diligent and reliable as well as having a strong attention to detail and doing the right thing” are her lifelong qualities which were even more instilled during her military service.

I have also had the opportunity to deal with individuals of diverse backgrounds, so I am easily adaptable to customers and needs,” she added.

Also offering a unique perspective on helping military members find a home best suited to their needs is BJ, who has the Military Relocation Professional (MRP) certification of the National Association of Realtors®. The MRP focuses on educating real estate professionals about working with current and former military service members.

“Having a military background, being a U.S. Military on the Move® agent and having the MRP certification helps me better provide our military with housing solutions and take full advantage of their military benefits and support programs,” BJ stated.

BJ explains how his service in the U.S. States Air Force makes it possible for him to better understand military concerns, protocols, customs and their unique processes and procedures.

“Having a military background says you understand their challenges and can better help service members and their families,” he added. “It is also important to earn their respect.”

Unlike many of us, military service members do not have the luxury of time to wait for the market to turn.

“When they need to move – they need to move now. When they need to buy, they need to buy now,” BJ emphasized.

For military buyers, he knows to anticipate a fast and intense property search.

“You may need to look at 25 homes, make an offer and seal a deal over a weekend.”

BJ understands that active duty members are often not looking for a dream home but instead a suitable home to set up a functioning household, since they may soon be reassigned.

Our veterans deserve the utmost respect and support, every day of the year.
