Osprey, Florida, originally settled by Judge John G. Webb of Utica, New York, was named after the majestic osprey bird found in the region’s tall pines, live oaks, and gumbo limbo trees. Established as a post office in 1884 with Webb as its first postmaster, Osprey has evolved into a vibrant community on Little Sarasota Bay. Notably, in 1910, Bertha Honore Palmer, a pioneering visionary and widow of Chicago magnate Potter Palmer, chose Osprey for her winter estate. At Spanish Point, she crafted intricate gardens while preserving early pioneer structures and ancient remnants. Today, Historic Spanish Point is a cherished site, maintained by the Gulf Coast Heritage Association since 1980. Osprey is also renowned for Oscar Scherer State Park, a 1,384-acre natural haven featuring canoeing, a swimming lake, campgrounds, nature trails, bicycle paths, and picnic areas, making it a prime destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
