Every year since 1999, Sarasota has rolled out the palm tree-lined red carpet to welcome filmmakers, actors and movie industry aficionados to the Sarasota Film Festival. Now in its 16th year, the Festival kicked off last Friday, April 4, and runs through April 13. An electric celebration of the art of film making, you can expect an impressive lineup of more than 180 films, including features, documentaries, shorts and kid-friendly picks. This year’s much anticipated calendar of movies includes Mad Men director John Slattery’s God’s Pocket, a dark comedy which features one of late actor Philip Seymour Hoffman’s final performances. Regarded as one of the top picks for this year’s festival, you can catch the screening on Friday, April 11 at 7:00 PM at the Sarasota Opera House. For the little ones, the festival’s youthFEST program features both animated shorts and the Oscar-nominated Ernest & Celestine, which is being shown at the Regal Hollywood 20 on Saturday, April 12 at 1:00 PM and Sunday, April 13 at 11:00 AM. If you would like a slice of the action taking place outside of the movie theater, the festival also includes a host of glamorous and exciting events. One of the most talked-about tickets in town right now is the Cinema Tropicale, a climactic celebration that takes place on the final Friday of the Festival at the Sarasota Yacht Club. Guests will mingle with filmmakers and artists from around the world, amid stunning Bay views, live music, high-end fashion and exotic, Caribbean themed cuisine.
