With school almost back in session, this weekend marks the return of Florida’s tax-free holiday. From August 1-3, shoppers will save on school supplies, clothing and some electronics, and with the array of retail options throughout Sarasota, Manatee and Charlotte counties, you’ll be top of the class in no time! Here’s what you need to know to make the most of this 72-hour shopping extravaganza: Study in Style – This year, you won’t pay sales tax on clothing up to $100 per item. Get some fashionable inspiration before you shop and check out style blogs – some of my personal favorites are Lauren Conrad, The Londoner and Style Confessional. Electric Essentials – Computers and other electronics that cost $750 or less enjoy tax-free status this weekend. A new tablet sure does make homework research more fun! Keep in mind, smart phones, cameras, game systems, televisions and some office electronics are not included. Tools for School – School supplies such as pencils, backpacks and notepads are all tax-free at up to $15 per item. Stock up now and you’ll be ready to take on everything from grammar to geometry. Present Planning – I know, I know, it’s only August, but thinking ahead and getting in some Christmas shopping will make things a whole lot easier come December. This weekend is a great time to pick up some tax-free stocking stuffers. List It – Before you go shopping, it’s a good idea to check what you already have, and make a list of things to buy. That way, you’ll avoid impulse buying and come home with exactly what you need. Coupon Clipping – Be sure to search for coupons before you shop to save even more. Store coupons are eligible, but manufacturer discounts are not. Sign up for email alerts from your favorite stores to stay in the know! For a complete list of eligible items, visit the Florida Department of Revenue’s website. What’s on your list this tax-free holiday?
