50 Years of Setting the Standard

From a singular vision to a global legacy, Michael Saunders has spent five decades defining Gulf Coast luxury real estate

In 1976, Sarasota was already known for its natural beauty and cultural vitality, but its luxury real estate market had yet to find its defining voice. When Michael Saunders opened her brokerage that year, she introduced more than a new firm — she introduced a standard.

With an emphasis on presentation, professionalism, and international perspective, she helped shape what high-end real estate on Florida’s Gulf Coast would become. Fifty years later, the brand she built reflects the region’s evolution — sophisticated, globally connected, and firmlyrooted in community.

Founding a Vision (1976)

The story began with a $5,000 loan and a determination to do things differently.

“I realized early in my real estate career that I could set up my own company — one established on a foundation of values. I would treat customers with respect and create an exceptional home-buying experience,” says Michael Saunders.

So, with that loan, she opened her first office on St. Armands Circle, focusing exclusively on waterfront properties — a world she knew intimately, having grown up on the northern tip of Longboat Key. She built the business around the core values of integrity, excellence, communication, and mutual profitability, grounded in a deep understanding of the Gulf Coast lifestyle.

A Brand Takes Shape

Michael understood that buying and selling property was deeply personal. How a home was presented mattered. Instead of listings displayed on faded, yellowing sheets of paper with curled-up corners taped to office windows — common in many real estate offices at the time — she created an experience more akin to an art gallery. Properties were presented in elegant picture frames, while fresh flowers, antique furnishings, and armoires created a warm, curated environment for buyers and sellers.

Homes were not simply marketed; they were thoughtfully introduced — each one telling a story and representing a lifestyle as much as a place to live.

It was more than aesthetic. It reflected a commitment to presentation, professionalism, and exceptional service — qualities that became synonymous with the firm’s identity and helped establish it as the leader in Gulf Coast luxury real estate.

The Architecture of Growth

As Michael’s reputation for the “art” of the sale strengthened, so did the company’s footprint. What began on the barrier islands soon moved north, south, and east. Before long, the company’s iconic white-on-blue signs were hanging from posts across Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte and Leecounties — unmistakable markers of a company defining the market.

As the firm expanded, so did its capabilities. Developer Services, Commercial, Mortgage, Title, Insurance, and Relocation divisions were added over time. Together these services afforded clients with a seamless experience throughout any stage of their real estate journey.  It was a deliberate evolution – one that strengthened the company as a trusted, comprehensive full-service brokerage.

Bringing the World to the Coast

Michael always knew the Gulf Coast belonged on a larger stage.  She didn’t wait for the world to find it; she went out and connected the two, aligning the company with global partners includingLeading Real Estate Companies of the World, Mayfair International Realty, and Luxury Portfolio International — which she helped found — and, more recently, Forbes Global Properties. Herpersonal involvement and leadership in these networks have helped cultivate long-term relationships with elite brokers across the globe.

In doing so, she ensured that a home on Longboat Key was as visible in London or Dubai as it was on St. Armands.

A Legacy in Step

The most meaningful milestone, however, did not happen in a boardroom.

In 2003, the next chapter began when Michael’s son, Drayton, joined the company. He learned the business from the ground up — working across divisions, overseeing mortgage operations, and managing several of the firm’s highest-producing offices before being named president in 2009.

Now he serves alongside his mother, who continues as CEO — a partnership that blends founding vision with forward momentum. Together, they lead a company still anchored to the principles on which it was built.

The Strength of a Team

From that first office on St. Armands Circle, the company has grown to 19 offices across Southwest Florida with more than 650 agents and 150 team members. While the company is often celebrated for its many achievements, Michael is quick to credit the people behind them.

From the outset, she believed success depended on hiring individuals with integrity and shared values — professionals who would uphold the standards on which the company was built.

Decades later, that belief is reflected in remarkable loyalty. Many agents and staff members have been with the company for more than twenty years; some for more than thirty. That loyalty is rare in any industry, but at Michael Saunders & Company, it is the norm.

“Our people have always been our greatest strength,” Michael says. “They carried us through the challenging markets and helped us grow in the strong ones.”

It is that strength that has made the company’s continued growth possible, including its recent expansion into St. Petersburg and Sanibel and the newly opened office in Wellen Park — communities where the next generation will carry the standard forward.

Today, the company remains the Gulf Coast’s leading independent brokerage and ranks in the top 1% of independent firms in the nation. But strip away the statistics and the accolades, and at the heart of it is still the woman who grew up on the water — determined to do things differently.

Fifty years later, she still does.
